Water Fasting

I’m an avid runner and a vegetarian. I’m very healthy and am always looking to learn new things about nutrition. Recently, I purchased a book about Fasting and am considering trying a 10 day total fast. The fast consists of drinking spring water only. The theory is that it allows one’s body to rest and detoxify. Also, the book advises that its good to fast one day a week. What is your opinion of this practice and is it safe for a normal, healthy person? I’m of normal weight and have never had any kind of eating disorder problem and am considering taking this up just as a rest-detoxifing practice. And should I continue taking vitamins if I do it? Any kind of opinion you have would be helpful.
If you are good health, and have not recently stop any bad habits such as smoking or eating junk food, I would strongly advise against fasting period. Your body will think it is being starved and will start saving fat to bank against starvation, that is a natural reaction to famine. So you are really setting yourself up for slowing down your metabolism, not a good thing.
